Purple crab apple _ two years´ development

Back in 2011 I have been travelling on a highway when I have spotted reddish blossoms on trees in the nearby forest.  On the way back  I have been actively looking for that area to see more details.   Nice reddish colour was really very attractive and it was not only the blossoms but also the red leaves that makes me to plan a visit to that area.  Originally I thought there are some red flowering cherries but at the time I have visited the spot I have realised that the trees are part of a Malus family.   The height of the trees were about 3-5 meters and I could not find anything really suitable for a collection.   Then I have decided to get closer to the highway. There was a grassy corridor  approximately 4 meters wide with some small bushes  covered with bronze leaves. More closer look  revealed nice chunky trunks with lot of dead woods caused by massive custs on the top of the trunks.   The highway maintenance workers have regularly cleared the area using the mobile clearing saws.  I have found  4-5 small trees with good potential and I have planned to collect them next spring.
The visit on 2012 was quite disappointing.   The summer and early spring maitenance have caused major damages to all small trees there.  The trees planned for collection have new massive cuts and many branches even bellow the cut line have died.   I have knelt down next to the one of the trees considering the next steps.  The view of the damaged trees was very sad as the trees do not look healthy.  Normally I would not collect such trees but this was a problematic situation.  The next pass by the maintenance workers could be the final one for these trees.  So I have taken the folding spade and start digging.   Finally I have taken out four trees.   The three of them have made it and they are doing well.

The tree in the picture below is the smallest one.   I am pleased by the  vigorous growth and its ability to form new callus.
