Apple tree minitrunks from seeds_Shohin starters
This is a bit of a fight. A true yamadori hunter ( YES! This is what I see looking in the morning in the mirror ) blogging about cultivation of trees from seeds?!? Well, the world is not anymore as it used to be...
A few years ago I bought two small apple trees from a DIY. Despite or maybe just because of my horticulture skills, both of them are not here anymore. Luckily I have managed to get some seeds before they had left me. Planted into the cultivation box a number of the seeds has germinated next spring. For the season and following winter I have left them in the box. Next spring the five strongest young plants were root pruned and planted into the ground for next three years. In the course of the second season I have made the first wiring to get some movement to the trunks. Easy to say but it was a bit of a struggle to decide what kind of shape I should give them.
Quite difficult to imagine how the bend made on a one year old seedling will look like on a mature tree... So it was a bit more testing at that time than a dedicated cultivation with a clear vision of the outcome.
The little plants were then left to grow freely with regular rewiring and some pruning of branches. At the end of each season in the ground the trees were dug out and root pruned to remove thick roots and to keep the rootball reasonably flat. At the beginning of the 5th season ( so this spring ) two of the plants were seeded into individual boxes while the remaining other two have been left in the ground as their parameters are still below my expectations.
Malus evereste No 1. Target height up to 15 cm
The top leader has been threadgrafted in the late summer. The first branch on the right will be removed once it helps to gain more girth to the trunk.
Malus evereste No 2. Target height 20 cm
The strong root on the left will be reduced next season. It is too much dominant. Also, I will correct the cut on the top. Fingers crossed to get more buds to fill the empty spaces.
Frankly, I will stay on a yamadori side as a main focus. But cultivation of the plant from seeds will stay there as well for some dedicated special project_now planning to germinate some seeds of Chinese quice:)
NEED TO INFLATE OUR BACKYARD TO STORE MY TREES......
